Its history dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by the famous epigram carved into the rock above the Pokrivenica spring, dedicated to the Roman god of water springs. An epigram from the 4th century mentions the poet Lucilius, and is today considered one of the oldest written traces in this part of Dalmatia.
The town itself is home to a 17th-century Franciscan monastery, which was once an important cultural and educational center, and today is a peaceful place for sightseeing and spiritual respite.
Active vacation
For nature lovers and active vacationers, Biokovo offers numerous hiking trails with spectacular views of the sea and islands. The climbs are also suitable for recreational hikers, and for the more experienced there is the possibility of longer hikes to the mountain peaks.
In addition to hiking, activities such as cycling, kayaking, jet skiing and stand-up paddle boarding are also popular. Equipment rental is available during the summer months.
