Živogošće – The Hidden Gem of the Makarska Riviera

Located at the foot of the majestic Biokovo mountain, between Makarska and Drvenik, Živogošće is one of those Dalmatian towns that captivates at first sight. This small seaside village, with its rich history and natural beauty, is an ideal haven for all those seeking peace, crystal clear sea and an authentic Mediterranean experience.

Magical coast and beaches

The main attraction of Živogosce is, without a doubt, its sea. Its turquoise color, transparency and pleasant temperature make it perfect for swimming, diving or simply enjoying the view. The coast is dotted with numerous pebble beaches surrounded by pine trees, which allows both sunbathing and staying in the shade. The most famous of them is Mala Duba beach – long, natural and quiet, ideal for families and couples.

The seaside promenade stretches through the entire town and connects all its parts: Porat, Mala Duba and Blato. During the evening hours, a walk along this path with the scent of pine trees and the sound of the waves becomes a real experience.

History and culture

Živogošće is not just a summer destination – it is a place with a soul. Its history dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by the famous epigram carved into the rock above the Pokrivenica spring, dedicated to the Roman god of water springs. An epigram from the 4th century mentions the poet Lucilius, and is today considered one of the oldest written traces in this part of Dalmatia.

The town itself is home to a 17th-century Franciscan monastery, which was once an important cultural and educational center, and today is a peaceful place for sightseeing and spiritual respite.

Active vacation

For nature lovers and active vacationers, Biokovo offers numerous hiking trails with spectacular views of the sea and islands. The climbs are also suitable for recreational hikers, and for the more experienced there is the possibility of longer hikes to the mountain peaks.

In addition to hiking, activities such as cycling, kayaking, jet skiing and stand-up paddle boarding are also popular. Equipment rental is available during the summer months.

Gastronomy and accommodation

Živogošće offers a wide range of accommodation - from private apartments and villas with sea views, to smaller family hotels. Local restaurants and taverns pride themselves on fresh fish, olive oil and wine from Dalmatian vineyards. We recommend trying Dalmatian peka, octopus on salad and of course - prosciutto and cheese with a glass of homemade prosecco.

Why visit Živogošće?

Because there is no crowd, noise or stress here. Živogošće is ideal for those who want to rest their souls, be close to nature and experience the real, unobtrusive Dalmatia. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or an active weekend – this is a place that will surprise you with its warmth and beauty.
